Historical Information

The P38 was the brain-child of Kelly Johnson, the legendary head of the "Skunk Works" in Burbank, California. Although the initial test flights of the aircraft were not promising, once the kinks had been ironed out the aircraft became a jack of all trades. The aircraft served in all theatres of the war, but gained particular notoriety in the Pacific where it laid waste to Japanese fighters and ships. Two engines came in handy for long missions over the ocean - and since all the weapons were in the nose, on the centerline of the plane, it was an extremely effective and deadly gunnery platform. Famous P38 aces Richard "Dick" Bong and Thomas "Tommy" McGuire reached 40 and 39 kills each in combat with the Japanese.
